NOT A POS

Designing for the Chaos of a Live Shift

The pitch deck for a modern POS system always shows a smooth, linear transaction. A smiling customer orders a coffee, taps their card, and walks away. But operators know that’s a fantasy.

The real test of software doesn't happen at the counter, it happens in the middle of a Friday dinner rush.

It happens when a table of eight decides to change seats after the drinks are poured. When a guest wants a pizza split like a legal settlement.

Most software treats a restaurant like a spreadsheetbut we are building NOT A POS because a restaurant is much more like a living, breathing organism. For day two, we focused on the operational flow. We stripped out the assumptions that tech companies make about your business, and built tools that protect your margins when things get complicated.

The Custody Battle of Split Checks

The easy version of a digital ticket survives exactly until lunch. Real tickets get sliced apart, merged, and transferred.

NOT A POS handles it all, no problem. Splitting a check isn't just copying text on a screen, either. It fundamentally changes taxes, discounts, and service charges. If an item moves to a new check, its entire financial history moves with it.

Giving the Kitchen a Real Pulse

Restaurants require precise time management. A steak dying in the window because of bad software routing ruins the guest's night, the server's tip, and the restaurant's reputation. We built out the exact workflows your line cooks need: holding orders, firing courses, and routing specific items to specific prep stations.

For kitchens that want more than a line of receipts, we've built a Kitchen Display System that tracks what is active, how long it has been waiting, and what course it belongs to. It brings order to the line instead of adding noise.

The Living Menu

A menu is not just a grid of colorful buttons. It is a complex web of modifiers, regional pricing, and legal restrictions.

Snapshot Pricing: Prices and taxes change. When an item is ordered in NOT A POS, the system takes a permanent, exact snapshot of its price, tax rules, and modifiers at that specific second. If you update your menu prices tomorrow, today's audit trail remains perfectly intact for your accountant.

The Work Ahead

The foundation of NOT A POS can now speak the true language of hospitality: table service, bar tabs, kitchen pacing, split money, and menu complexities.

We aren't saving the difficult parts of the industry for later, because "later" is usually when cheap software starts costing you money. The bones are strong. The operational logic is awake.

Next, we start putting a face on the machine. We are moving to the glass to build a terminal interface that a cashier can understand in five seconds, and a manager can trust during a 7:00 PM rush.
